The name of our hotel, “Alte Canzley,” means “Old Chancellery” and for centuries has been the residence of the chancellors of the powerful Saxon kings residing in Wittenberg. King Frederick the Wise (1463 – 1525) who resided there at the time of Martin Luther, was one of the candidates to be appointed Emperor of the “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation,” the most powerful potentate in the western world at that time. However, Frederick declined due to his advanced age.

Reviews

This is an amazing place to stay. Our room was a great size.
They only have 9 rooms since this is a historical building and are very limited as to making any major changes to the building itself.
If you are interested in history it is located next to the church where Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door.
Staff was nice and very accommodating. Breakfast was also excellent.

I picked this hotel for my parents’ golden wedding anniversary, and we couldn’t have been happier. Rooms, service, and location were all superb! Both of our rooms were very large, clean, and tastefully appointed. The Alte Canzley prides itself on “subtle charm” and that is exactly what you are going to get. While our room had a view of the garden, my parents’ room faced the “Theses Doors” of the Schlosskirche right across the street.

In sum, I can highly recommend this historic hotel and its very friendly, helpful staff.
