Desiderius Erasmus Roterdamus – 1466/1469-1536
Erasmus was a classical scholar who enjoyed the sobriquet "Prince of Humanists". Using humanist techniques, he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament which raised questions that would be influential in the Reformation. The extraordinary popularity of his books is reflected in the large number of editions and translations that have appeared since the sixteenth century, and in the undiminished interest excited by his elusive but fascinating personality.
