Reconstruction Work at the Castle Church in Wittenberg
In the Luther‘s town right now many people work to prepare the reformation jubilee in 2017 with its highlight on 31st October, 2017. The total reconstruction of the most important museums and buildings is a big part of that, including the city church „St. Marien“, where Luther preached and the castle church with its Theses door where Luther fixed his 95 Theses in 1517.
The building procedure started in 2013 and will last until autumn 2016. For the sake of the construction process (scaffolding, floor and wall works ), the Castle Church unfortunately is temporarily closed completely to visitors. At the moment, the Castle church only may be visited at “Guided Building tours” on Saturday at 10:30am and 1:30pm or on Sunday at 1:30pm. For other times, the Castle church is not possible to be visited inside. Also, worship and church music just may take place temporarily in the Castle Church right now.
Please visit the information center in front of the Castle Church, it is also open during the closing hours of the Castle Church:
Tues-Sat: 10:00am to 12:00am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Sunday 1:00pm to 4:00pm
On 22nd April, 2014 the inner frame of the Castle church was started to dismantle, the outer frame and its cover of the walls will be there until autumn 2015. That will be dismantled starting in September, 2015 (expected date). As soon as there is a fi-nal date and duration of these works we will you inform you about that.
Since November 2014, the city church "St. Marien" reopened to visitors from Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, on Sunday from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm. Daily at 3:00 pm a church tour is offered - even individual appointments are possible.
We kindly ask for your appreciation for these necessary restrictions (especially on the castle church) and would be pleased to welcoming you in our hotel anyway!
